Ever since I was a kid I have loved to write and receive letters especially from people in different countries. It was a great way to experience different cultures and not spend a fortune traveling.
And I think many people would agree that there is just something exciting about getting a letter in the mail. It's kind of a dieing art!
Over the years I have had penpals from many different places. I started off writing a good friend that moved out of state and we have stayed in contact for about 10 years now, writing letters back and forth.
Then in high school, after studying German for a few years, I applied for a penpal in Germany. I have been in contact with him for a few years as well. We are friends on facebook so the handwritten letters have stopped.
But I have sought out a few pen paling sites and have found success with pen pals from England and South Africa. It is so cool to open up the mailbox (the real one, outside your door) and find a real letter there.
I don't know maybe it's just me but there is definitely something really cool about learning how other people live.
So until next time, write someone a letter!

You are so right about the dying artform of handwritten letters. It used to be the only way to communicate with family and friends far away.
ReplyDelete(I wonder if they even teach penmanship in school anymore. In fifth grade we only had the privilege of writing our assignments with a special LePlume ink pen after we earned a good grade in penmanship!)
There is something so special about receiving a note written in someone's own handwriting. I hope it never entirely dies out...
